Twelve Extraodinary Women

Sarah

Sarah's story is long and taken from a whole range of passages:
Genesis 11:30
Genesis 16
Genesis 17
Genesis 18
Hebrews 11:11
*our key verse!!*

Describe Sarah and her life, and her strengths and weaknesses
  • jealous -- she mistreated Hagar
  • shrewdish
  • impatient -- didn't want to wait for God's plan
  • acknowledged God
  • controlling/making own plans
  • foundation = mother of nations = root of people
  • submit to Abraham (Genesis 18:6) -- links back to Ephesians

Genesis 17:15 -- name change
God's covenant with Abraham (Father of all nations, many decendants)

Genesis 22:15-18
God restated his promise again (after stopping Abraham from sacrificing Issac)

Whenever God asked Abraham to leave an area, Sarah always followed him

Abraham's journey:
Acts 7:2-4
Genesis 12:5
Genesis 12:10-11
Genesis 13:1
Genesis 20:1-2

Haran --> Canaan --> Egypt --> Negev

Genesis 12:13-20 Abram in Egypt
Sarah sacrificed herself, she obeyed Abram's commands to the point where she could have sinned (commit adultary)

Genesis 18:1-5 Angels appeared to Abraham
Sarah makes bread --> good housewive, took care of guests, willing to serve
But in the same passage, she laughed, and lied (lack of faith)

Hall of Fame for FAITH
Hebrews 11
Only two women mentioned: Sarah and Rahab

1 Samuel 15:22
Obey > sacrifice

John 14:15
Obeying God shows how much you love him

What can we learn about weak faith from Sarah?

  • God can use us even when we have weak faith
  • God can still use and bless us

Genesis 18:14
Nothing's too hard for the LORD
We can be secure in Him

Application
Do you believe that God is trying to accomplish something in your life right now that you yourself can't do?
